Advanced and experimental VFX techniques | Personal project brief

Description

In this personal project we are aimed to build a project for ourselves. This project should be considered as an exercise made with the purpose of:

  • Explore all the skills learned in the course in a more creative and personal environment.
  • Work in the techniques we would like to specialize in, in order to develop our skills towards the fields we would like to cover in our professional career.
  • Conceive this project as a starting point to the final thesis project, whether in a conceptual or technical way

Techniques

The techniques I am more interested in are:

  • Rotoscopy
  • Tracking
  • Keying
  • 2D and 3D compositing.

In terms of shooting, I would be interested in:

  • Studio shooting (green screen)
  • Location Shooting (exteriors)
  • Mix of green screen footage over a location footage

Idea

My idea to build this project will be to do a portrait of London city: A short experimental VFX video in which the character and mood of the city is portrayed.

It is not conceived to be a presentation of London in a touristic or descriptive way, just a definition of the mood of the city through the people who lives in.

In order to build a global and accurate definition, I would need to start from my hypothesis of how London is, and then transform and complete my definition by collecting different testimonies and opinions. Then, once I have the definition completed, I would need to build up a non narrative story to portray the definition given.

The audiovisual language of the piece would be related with the definition given. For instance, in my opinion one feature that obviously represents London is speed. Therefore, fast pictures and editing would be an obvious resource to be used. Then, the rhythm can be slowed down along with the narrative in those cases in which we want to give a message.

Workflow scheme

  1.  Build the definition
    1. Record and collect different testimonies that defines London
    2. Unify those testimonies, prioritising the common features of different testimonies
    3. Create a unique piece (written or in video format) of those testimonies and use it as the manifesto in order to build the script around it
  2. Do the script and the production documents
    1. Write the script
    2. Build a storyboard
    3. Do a technical script stating all the shots I need for each scene, in which locations and with which atrezzo
  3. Record
    1. Following the technical script, record in all the locations and with different actors all the scenes of the movie, in order to have the footage reade to work with it
    2. Manage to get all the external footage needed for the VFX components
  4. Edit it
    1. Apply all the effects and changes into the original footage
    2. Do the editing to have the final result
